The interior, or inside, of your tooth contains nerves and blood vessels that together create the tissue called the pulp. This internal tissue can become damaged or infected, resulting in extreme pain and an infection, also known as an abscess, in the jawbone. Removal of the tooth pulp to treat damaged or infected tissue is done through a treatment called a root canal. During a root canal the pulp is removed and then the inside of the tooth is cleaned out and sealed. Root canal treatment can save and repair the tooth to prevent tooth loss.
